Dr Margot BuchananMargot Buchanan’s Stirling Journey: From CMC Student to CMC Teaching Fellow

I came to Stirling University as a mature student following many years working as a journalist, Chief Reporter and depute editor in local newspapers. Stirling was my first choice of university due to its excellent reputation for film and media studies and this seemed to follow on from my professional career in newspapers, which began when I left secondary school.  I began higher education by taking a first, joint degree in English Studies and Film and Media Studies and I enjoyed university so much I decided to return the following academic year in order to study for a Master’s Degree in Media Research. I immediately began studying for a PhD after completing my Master’s, and concentrated on the developing field of social media – my thesis is titled Facebook: Privacy and Power in Social Space. I taught in the division throughout the years of working on my thesis and have worked on a wide range of the subjects taught in the division. My principal research interests are social media and representations in the media.

I am now looking forward to continuing my relationship with the Division by working with our new 1st year Journalism students and I hope that they enjoy the Stirling experience as much as I have.
