Philippa Lovatt joins Communications, Media and Culture
I’m very excited to be here at Stirling and am looking forward to teaching the new module ‘Global Creative Industries’ on the Media Management Masters here in Scotland, but also in Vietnam from 2014. This course will explore the links between production, exhibition and distribution across the film, television and music industries with a particular focus on the transnational connections between these different forms and the political and economic significance of them. It investigates a wide range of issues from branding to piracy and takes up a number of my research interests around transnationalism and the creative industries.
Another important strand of my research relates to the study of sound in film and television. I am particularly interested in exploring the links between sound design, phenomenology, ethics and spectatorship and will be presenting a paper on sound in the prison film which explores these ideas at the inaugural European Sound Studies Association conference in Berlin at the beginning of October: http://www.soundstudies.eu/2013conference/.
I am a founding member of the Scottish Sound Studies Network and in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, am currently applying for a grant to fund a number of workshops (‘Scoping Scottish Sound Studies’) to bring together various people working on sound across Scotland, from researchers to sonic arts practitioners, to those involved in the industry. It is hoped that this will encourage networking, the sharing of ideas and create opportunities for our graduates to make contact with future employers and potential collaborators.
Before coming to Stirling, I taught Sound Theory at Glasgow School of Art and a course on Sound Design in Film and Television at the University of Glasgow where I received my PhD in 2011. I am currently involved in putting together a sound-based exhibition to take place at University of Stirling in Spring 2014 to celebrate the life and work of Norman McLaren and look forward to letting you know more about that in the very near future.
